Croatia advances plans for small modular nuclear reactors to tackle power shortage

ZAGREB, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Croatia is moving forward with plans to build small modular reactors to address its electricity shortage, Economy Minister Ante Susnjar said in an interview with Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT) on Wednesday.

Susnjar noted that the Nuclear Energy Working Group, established by the government in February to lead the initiative, "is moving forward very well." On Wednesday, the group held a meeting with parties interested in providing nuclear technologies to Croatia.

He added that the working group will draft a legal framework for parliamentary approval by summer and will propose the creation of a dedicated agency to oversee the project.

Croatia, he said, remains committed to investing in its energy sector with the goal of achieving energy self-sufficiency.
