ZAGREB, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Prices of goods and services for personal consumption in Croatia rose 5.2 percent in May compared with the same period last year, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday.
Energy prices recorded the highest increase, rising by 16.9 percent year-on-year, while service prices climbed 7.9 percent. Prices of food, beverages, and tobacco increased by 2.3 percent, the data showed.
The Croatia currently has one of the highest inflation rates in the eurozone, according to data from Eurostat.
As part of anti-inflation measures, the Croatian government announced the introduction of new taxes last week. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tomislav Coric said that Croatia was facing an energy price shock due to geopolitical tensions.
"This, combined with strong growth in domestic demand driven by high levels of economic activity, increases Croatia's vulnerability to spillover effects from energy shocks and economic overheating," Coric said.
