Live COVID-19 updates: U.S. cases surpass 14 mln

BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW YORK -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 14 million on Thursday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

U.S. COVID-19 case count rose to 14,012,378, with a total of 274,648 deaths, as of 2:26 p.m. local time (1926 GMT), according to the CSSE tally.

OTTAWA -- Canada is seeing a continued increase in COVID-19 counts, reporting a total of 395,576 cases of COVID-19 and 12,395 deaths as of Thursday afternoon, according to CTV.

Canada's national-level data indicate daily averages of 6,044 new cases over the past seven days and 74,596 people tested daily, with 7.4 percent testing positive (Nov. 22-28), the Public Health Agency of Canada said Thursday.

SANTIAGO -- Chilean President Sebastian Pinera on Thursday extended a state of emergency for the third time, to continue imposing restrictions to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The 90-day extension to the state of catastrophe, which was declared more than 8 months ago, came amid fears that Chile may see a second wave of infections in early 2021, fueled by holiday season socializing.

LJUBLJANA -- Slovenia on Thursday reported 1,772 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the national tally of confirmed cases to 81,338, according to official figures.

A total of 1,289 patients were being treated in hospitals (four more than the day before), 198 of them in intensive care (one fewer than the day before). Forty-five new deaths took the toll to 1,592.

BUCHAREST -- Romania recorded 211 COVID-19-related deaths in a 24-hour span, setting a new daily record and bringing the total number of deaths to 11,876, according to official data released Thursday.

The previous record was 203 people set on Nov. 11. The average daily death toll was 145.43 in November.
